Congrats. How much is the donation I need to match?
Tank -- Stick with the original.
Hurricane -- Remember his roots.
Avery -- Also a survivor from New Orleans.
Looter -- He's black and from New Orleans.
As many people know ~80 pets were brought from a shelter in N.O. to the Bexar County Humane Society for adoption. So today, LJ and I went to get one.
We haven't had a dog in a few years -- we had to give ours up a few years ago when we were temporarily in apartment before getting this house.
Anyway, the pets at the humane society are terrific! They have every different kind you may want from puppies and kittens to elderly dogs and cats.
We picked a male black lab who is about 3 years old -- he's all black with some white around the feet. He's very skinny (ribs showing) but they said he weighs in nearly 65 pounds. He wasn't neutered, so we couldn't bring him home today. He's having the surgery on Friday morning and we'll pick him up on Friday afternoon.
I encourage anyone in San Antonio who doesn't have a pet and wants one to go take a look. They give you a discount is you pick one of the animals that were brought in from N.O. The price includes the adoption, spay/neuter if necessary, shots, etc. We are paying a little extra and getting full blood work and some other things to make sure he's okay.
His name is currently TANK but I think they just gave him that name when the took him in at the shelter in New Orleans.
We are thinking of giving him a new name. Suggestions?
Congrats. How much is the donation I need to match?
I kinda like TANK!
Congrats on your dog!
Name him Cajun.
Regular adoptions are $89. Hurricane pet adoptions are discounted to $45. But we actually only paid $25 to the humane society and we are also having a complete battery of tests run, etc to make sure he's in good shape -- the total of that was $77 (they didn't require this at all - we just wanted to do it).
So make your donation however you see fit - I'm sure they'd appreciate any amount.
BTW, I love black labs!
@ the looter option
I think Cajun should be on the poll!
He'll come home with the cone on his head after he's fixed. Dogs with cones crack me up! When we got ours spayed, when the cone was on her head, she was all sad with her tail between her legs. As soon as I took it off, she perked up. It was the funniest thing.
I refuse to vote until Cajun is on the poll!
L O O T E R ! especially after he raids your trash for the first time!
x a gazillion
I thought it was sad that he was 3 years old and not neutered already. I'm not sure if he was a street dog in N.O. or he was just taken to the shelter by a family who was escaping the hurricane. When we get him home, we should be able to see if he's used to being in a house.
if he is used to being outside, he will probably be instantly potty trained! most outside dogs hate pissing ting inside
When our dog found us, the vet guessed she was about 18 months old. She wasn't fixed either, so who knows if she's already had puppies or not. I just wanted to get her fixed before she went into heat. The funniest thing she did was get all my son's beenie babies and put them in her crate with her. Now she just tears them apart.
I'm pretty sure she was just an outside dog. I had to house train her also.
Now she's spoiled rotten! I'm sure your dog will be too!![]()

That Is A Great Thing You Did For That Dog...i'm Very Proud Of You
If I Did Not Already Have 6 Dogs, 3 Cats & A Bird I Would Get One Myself
Very nice Kori and LJ.
Tremendously sweet of both of you.
Me too. Weirdly enough, they were the most common dog there. There was 1 black lab, 2 black lab mixes, another black lab/rotweiller, plus our dog that were brought in from N.O. Plus at least 3 or 4 other black lab mixes that were already there. And that doesn't even include the puppies - that's just the dogs over six months.
I didn't even go look at the puppies because I knew that I'd want them all and probably cry that I couldn't help them.
Kori, did you buy a crate yet? That worked wonders getting my dog to understand she wasn't allowed ot go in the house (She's only outside to do her bidnezz and when it's nice out). And she still sleeps in there on her own free will 2 years later.
I'm going to wait to see if he's already housebroken. He might have been living in a house up until days before the hurricane or something - I'm not sure. He's really skinny, so if he was in a house recently then they weren't feeding him much.
If he's not housebroken, then I'll do the crating.
I gave up on waiting for Cajun to be added to the poll so I voted for Tank. He already has a name so why change it? Plus I like Tank.
