HP laptop died, and now have a mac. Will I be able to recover my files and will they work on the mac (mainly concerned about my itunes library and pics/videos) Also want to know if I run this mac with a dual boot setup if some of the programs I had on the laptop that were for the PC will work on the mac.
Another problem I've run into, if I sync my iphone to the new mac will I lose all the music that is already on it, and the pictures too? For some reason I can't find a way to transfer the songs from my iphone into itunes.

get your old hard drive, hook it up to something like this,
    http://shop2.frys.com/product/5710852
make sure at it is mac compatible (this one is) and it had both 2.5 , 3.5 and sata so your cover all your bases.

once its hooked up should be visible as a usb drive then copy and paste the to your new hard drive, things lke jpegs and mp3 are cross compatible, dont know about what itunes uses though, so youll have to check for that.

there are programs out there to get the music, etc, off your iphone. just don't re-sync it until you recover your . I don't remember many off hand, but I can look around. for your contacts at least, google contacts can sync wirelessly. I lost mine once and decided to keep them synced that way:

for one the mac won't handle like a pc. i kinda get frustrated at things the mac does as opposed the pc. it probably won't bother you, but it's frustrating to me. for example when i hit and close the window for an application it should close the program. not so much for the mac. you have to physically quit the program. resizing the windows is a pain. there isn't a true "maximize" button.

    1. iTunes, by default, can only sync content TO an iPhone/iPod Touch. They cannot sync content FROM it. Like lee said, there are many third party applications that can do this, so find one of those and recover your music/movies/pictures BEFORE you sync your iPhone to your new iTunes.

I also highly recommend checking the option to Manually Manage Music and Movies so you don't have to worry about such things.

    2. You can set up Boot Camp on any Mac running 10.5, as long as you have a Windows XP or Windows Vista disc that isn't 64-bit or OEM (comes with a PC). Once you have set up Boot Camp, Windows will run virtually just like it did on your old PC, all files included. However, with Boot Camp, you can only boot into one system at a time: either boot to Mac, or boot to PC.

There are programs such as Parallels and VMWare Fusion that allow you to run Windows simultaneously with OS X in a virtual machine. I highly recommend these as well, though you'll want plenty of memory.

    3. The green button in the top left maximizes your window as much as possible, but the whole "full screen" thing just doesn't fly in OS X. This bothered me at first, but once I got used to having 4-5 windows available at a time, I got to the point where I hate the Windows style. Cmd+Q and Cmd+W will be your friends.

Do you, as an Apple user, really want to get into a "who's got the better hardware" penis measuring contest with a bunch of PC geeks?

You're going to lose, and horribly. So I ask you -- still using a pimped out PC with OSX?

By pimped out I mean from about 2 years ago PC standards. The $2400 Mac Pro would STILL get curbstomped by my PC which I bought 16 months ago and paid $950 for. Amazing.

    your perspective:
measuring hardware is everything and performance from your OS is nothing.

    my perspective:
wanting a machine that doesn't up all the time, isn't prone to the bs the net has to offer, and doesn't have to be "reinstalled"(your method of madness) a billion times.

the difference is above and stated pretty clearly for you to read.

i agree that the hardware isn't up to today's standards in terms of what you can build for the same price but you are forgetting one thing... winOS isn't up to today's standards in terms of performance and reliability.

if i could build my own computer, which i am definitely capable of doing, and run a non-hacked version of OSX on it, which at the moment i can't, then yeah i would've went that route. better yet, if i could just run my graphic apps without all the hassle winOS puts in your way then i would and gladly on a linux machine at that!

you're trying to make this into a hardware thing which it isn't, at least not for me. i knew buying a mac that i wouldn't be up to par with the in' nerd game playing geeks out there jacking off on WoW all day but that's not my reasoning behind purchasing a mac. like all people who switch, we want reliability and not all the baggage and drama you get from winOS!

that's the best you could come up with?

    alright, I'll play along...

Actually no... I'm still playing on my 3.5 ghz overclocked Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 with double SLI GTX280's and 8 gigs of DDR3 RAM. All of which I bought for probably less than half of what you spent on your Mac... from home, I might add.

I don't dislike the Mac. I actually love their OS. Its ing Mac users like you who I can't stand. I hate fan boys of all classes.

"i got a blah blah blah POS that still gets bogged down by mysearchbar.com bs and i still can't comprehend the fact that that fanboy doesn't give a what kind of hardware specs i have."

to each their own WoW nerd. personally i don't need blah blah blah, i just need a machine with a reliable OS to do what i need to do to make money. it's that simple. i have a 360 for games and that's that.

btw, i've been down the bs winOS pipeline for 15 yrs until i finally realized that's all it ever was and there's no end to that pos OS. do yourself a favor and buy a mac or better yet put linux(any distro is better then winOS) on your pc!

@ you not getting that this isn't about PC vs Mac, but about your sorry ing ass always popping up whenever anything not Mac related is mentioned to tell everyone how awesome a Mac is and how stupid people are for not buying one. You are an idiot fanboy like every other idiot fanboy, no matter what the you use your computer for.

haha. fanboy isn't really something i'd label myself as... that would mean i go out of my way to slap an apple sticker on the back of my ride, buy an iphone, an ipod, and everything else apple, right? nah, that ain't me.

i do however know quality when it comes to an OS unlike the winOS fanboys like yourself who will stand behind a POS till the day they die and when that happens their collection of 100+ built pcs fall to the grave with them as well as all their bs howto enlarge your popups, mysearchbar crap, trojans, viruses, reinstalls, ect...

the thing your not understanding is i understand where you're coming from when you state how badass your hardware is and i agree it's badass but with all that's said and done... at the end of the day the OS you run on that hardware does it no justice. so in conclusion; you're wasting your time and money on a machine that should be doing more but is held back by the limitations you've placed on it's par ion, that being winOS!

trust me, the day i can install my graphic apps on a linux machine will be the day i build a 3.5 ghz overclocked Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 with double SLI GTX280's and 8 gigs of DDR3 RAM.

btw, don't you think 8 gigs of ram is a little overkill there? and you say i waste money. ha. priorities buddy, priorities.

You might not put stickers on your ride, but you certainly go out of your way to tell everyone how stupid they are for not buying a Mac. That is fanboy bull right there.

I'm not a windows fan. I have never been a windows fan. I fully aware of all the bull that comes with it. In fact, I've posted in this forum several times with problems I've had with Vista. I'm just not willing to s out close to a thousand more dollars for a computer when I can make do with a better PC and a mediocre OS. The day Apple stops overcharging the out of their computers is the day I'll buy one.

by the way, I use my computer to edit HD footage, hence the high RAM count. I play very few games and even then, not much at all. I've never touched WoW. Ever. I do like knowing that if I want to play a game, I'll be able to play it like it was intended to be played. Hence the double SLI.

i don't even go to church!

on a lighter note though... most everything i say here is sarcastic in nature. i pretty much like saying, "should've got a mac!" because it cracks me up. i'll give you an example of what i mean...

" all other nba teams but the spurs! spurs are #1!"

^ now i whole heartily agree with my statement right there but i am also well aware that each individual has his/her own favorite team and no matter how much i might state my opinion it ain't gonna change theirs and i don't expect it to; same goes for "buy a mac!". you gotta sometimes read between the lines, i don't use college ruled so i know it's a bit cramped and my writing is like chickens.
