Minnesota top defensive team and close to no. 1 was tough to beat, narrative is strong. But many should take a hint with Gobert missing last game and his team not skipping a beat.

Yeah, it's always a good idea to base things on a one game sample size.

Minnesota has 3 other players on their team ranked in the Top-20 defensively this season. The fact that they looked absolutely dominant defensively against the defending champs last night without Gobert playing a single minute speaks volumes.

Meanwhile the Spurs drop from the 4th-ranked Defense with Wemby on the court to the 28th-ranked Defense when he’s off is insane. All while Wemby lead the league in Blocks & Stocks + Steals for a Center. Wemby most definitely robbed tbh.

Doesn't take one ounce away from Gobert's contributions, but yes, it's very tangible proof that he has an excellent defensive team around him and at the very least it dispells the notion that he should be the recipient of the award based on team's defensive performance, which is the main argument over Wemby for a lot of voters (best defensive player on the best defensive team rhetoric).

Nothing new.....the NBA has long screwed the Spurs out of individual awards.

Bowen was the best perimeter defender in the league for a handful of years and not 1 DPOY. Duncan is one of the greatest defensive players of all-time, not one DPOY. Not only that, but Duncan was not a unanimous ROY, even though he should have been.

not awards, but also, the Spurs never have anyone in the 3pt shooting contest, even though they have had a few players leading or in the top 3 the league in 3pt % before the all-star break.

Assuming this is correct, let's handle this Timmy Duncan style and who gives a F what moron sport writers vote.

The winner is selected by a panel of 124 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada, each of whom casts a vote for first, second and third place selections. Each first-place vote is worth five points, second-place votes are worth three points, and a third-place vote is worth one.

Why ya'll surprise with the dpoy result? Spurs suck on defense so no way wemby win dpoy..if the spura are in top 10 defense in the league then wemby has a legitimate chance. Dont say wemby got robbed because its clearly a robbery if wemby win it. Dont worry wemby will win couple of dpoy in the future if the team starts winning and play good defense.

DPOY is always the laziest award. If someone's won it two or three times, they're basically grandfathered into another one or two when they don't deserve it. Ben Wallace, Dwight Howard, Dikembe Mutumbo, and now Rudy.

So he should be penalized for being surrounded by superior personnel? The defending champs are in shambles and banged up and it was still one game.

Wembanyama definitely had a case despite fogies/agenda driven fools pretending otherwise, but I wouldn't say he was robbed either.

Robbed is too strong a word, my problem is with the "best defensive player on the best defensive team" narrative. It doesn't hold water, and it's dishonest to try and censor debate because of it.

A whole season of data indicates that Wemby was way more impactful than Gobert on the defensive side of the ball, tbh.

I don't know, I remember back in February where the Spurs were ranked one of the worst defensive teams of all time when Victor was off the court, but they were ranked 5th or 6th in the NBA this season when he was on the court. If that held up throughout the whole regular season (Did it hold up?), how could he not be defensive player of the year? I think Victor should have won, or come a lot closer. If 18 people missed him on the ballot, those 18 people are freaking re s (sorry to use this wording).

As for Gobert, he's good, but just because his team was at the top defensively, doesn't mean he was the best as his team played good team defense and had other good defenders on it. They didn't suck when he wasn't on the court. It's not that black and white IMO.

You have to look at the logic of the best defender of the year based on the same logic as the MVP. Who is valuable? Being a good defender on one of the worst teams in the league has no value. What matters first is the impact of a player on a contender team. Not his individual stats.

It's already quite exceptional to see Victor second.

Regarding Gobert, the staff and the team seem to say that he has implanted a defensive culture in the team. And that contributes to the valuable side of a player as it contributes to win games. We know what defensive culture is in principle at Spurs. Respect that. “It’s not who we are.”

For many years, it was also said that Tony Parker was not a playmaker because he made few assists. There are types of play that force stats, and others don't. Stats are not performances. When a football/soccer goalkeeper makes ten saves per game, it's not that he's exceptionally good, it's that his defense is lousy. In basketball, it's the same. Making blocks is far from being a meaningful statistic for evaluating the general defense of a player or his team. This can also prove that the outside defense lets everything pass and that the Center/shot blocker serves as a goalkeeper. When you listen to pundits talk about Gobert's defense (even his historical detractors), they praise his ability to defend in the perimeter where he once couldn't. Fewer blocks, more ability to come to the periphery and not be handicapped on defensive switches.

Start winning matches for that kind of awards. In principle, we know what happens first and foremost at Spurs. By the defense.
