I hate how every thread has a trade proposal packaging Blair and Bonner, or Blair, Neal, and Bonner, or in this case, Blair, Splitter, and Bonner.

No NBA team is going to trade for Matt Bonner. They wouldn't want a multi year commitment to a below average player. No team wants Blair/Bonner. The fact is Blair makes peanuts and eats regular season minutes. Damn worth keeping

But as far as Brand goes I don't see why the Mavs wouldn't make a good offer. All the marquee free agents are gone, they are desperate to add pieces, and Brand's contract only has 1 season left, so they could claim him for an amount like 10 mil and let him play out his one year contract and still have cap flexibility next offseason...

Dallas will not forgo trying to build a championship worthy roster during the Dirk era. They will do what they need to get a compe ive team that will make the playoffs.

That said, if you have Dirk, Kaman, Marion, and Wright, you may want to shore up your guards/small forward positions.

    They did last season.

36-30 and swept in the first round.

They thought they still had enough to compete and repeat. Obviously, they thought wrong. But they won't surrender completely to the lottery if Dirk is on the roster.

I agree with that, but that's quite different from what you said earlier.

I read Mavs will bid in the ballpark of $4-5M for Brand. Next.

They didn't have enough to compete. They had enough to get into the playoffs while retaining the capspace to make a go at Deron Williams.

As for Brand, unless he threatens to retire (don't know why he would) or not report, ala Billups or Fisher, he is going to Dallas.

Free-agent forward Elton Brand is hoping the Dallas Mavericks submit the winning bid for his services among eligible teams and claim him off of amnesty waivers, according to a source close to the 33-year-old.

Good question. Brand gets the same money no matter who claims him. The only way he gets more is if he goes unclaimed.

Look at the other teams with cap space.

Would you rather play in Dallas or Sacramento? Charlotte?

    You get the idea.

2012-13 is the last year of Brand's deal.
Good call - I was thinking of Haywoods contract, not Brands.

I don't think he has much choice. Hopefully Cuban will run out of cap room soon. With additions of Kaman and Brand, I don't think they look all that great still. But he is succeeding in preventing teams like Spurs from adding complementary pieces which could take them from contender to champion.

Because they're just about the only team with cap space that doesn't utterly suck?

    That's my guess, anyway.

The winning bid will be revealed after 4 p.m. CT on Friday.

Teams under the salary cap, which include the Mavs, Portland Trail Blazers and Phoenix Suns, among others, had first shot to bid for Brand. The Mavs were expected to make an "aggressive" bid and they have high hopes of landing the 6-foot-8 veteran forward and adding him to a front line with Dirk Nowitzki and Chris Kaman.

    Dirk, Kaman, Brand, and Marion.

How is that much worse than Duncan, Blair, Splitter, and Bonner?

Because if you're going to list Dallas' 3 best bigs and their SF, the corresponding Spurs would be Duncan, Diaw, Splitter, and Leonard.

Marion plays 4 probably as much as Diaw.

I'll give you Duncan, Splitter, Blair/Bonner and Diaw

    vs.

    Dirk, Kaman, Brand, and Marion.

Not true. Marion played 86% of his minutes at SF last season. Diaw played 100% of his minutes with the Spurs at PF or C.

So, it's still Leonard to complete the list of comparable players.

Ok, but it's a much different equation than one that includes Bonner and Blair.

Add Scola to Dallas and Bonner/Blair to the Spurs list?
