View Full Version : Who will win MVP?

These are the actual odds in Vegas. So don't complain about them. :)

Wow, James 11/10? I don't think LeBron should win it but I expected Vegas to be up to date with the hype lately.

Slomo

By definition I think Kobe is the most valuable player to his team - but the odds just plain suck. Nash doesn't deserve it two years in a row. I like Billups a lot but he is not "most valuable" because of the incredibly strong team he is on. I don't like the others much (although I guess Dirk is pretty valuable to the Mavs). LBJ - not yet.

So I'm going for the long shot: Somebody else.

I realize there's a fair amount of hype/politics/lobbying involved in getting these awards, but I'm an idealist at heart.

Although I don't necessarily agree with it, I voted for Nowitzki because the question is "Who will win MVP", not "Who do you think should win MVP".

Where's Tony? :spin

Indeed.

Dirks odds provide a good incentive. I have heard a lot of talk lately about Lebron but for those odds I will pass on that bet. Nash would be a better bet if he didn't win last year. Billups has the disadvantage of being surrounded by talent. More talent than the Suns (without Amare), talent that might survive a while if he went out injured.
That Dirk bet is looking good.

Edit: I ignored Kobe because I hate him, which is one reason I don't bet real money.

how much $ would you get back if you put money on Kobe? a little over the double?

What doesn't make sense? These are the actual odds.

If you bet $100 on Kobe, you'd get your original $100 back, plus $110.

I like Wade here. He carried that team this year, considering Shaq's problems.

With three teams getting 60 or more wins, it would be a complete joke to award MVP to a player on a team with <50 wins, but apparently lots of people are betting on James and Kobe.

That's what I was thinking. The Dirk odds are pretty sweet. A lot of people I know in the media think he is deserving.

I think Kobe's 81 + his season's average will make them choose him, and if you look at Slomo's post, it makes sense.

Kobe is the most valuable player to his team.

Kori Ellis

As of this morning, the real Vegas odds have changed a little - Dirk is now 10:1. Nash is 7:2. Everyone else remained the same since last night.

Too easy! Let's make it interesting, I guarantee James, Kobe, Brand and Nowitzky will all finish ahead of Wade.

Here's how I see it playing out...

Steve Nash and Chauncey Billups will split the "point-guard-running-a-top-team" vote. Kobe and Lebron will split the "Great-player-with-great-numbers-leading-team-of role-players-into-the-playoffs" vote. Wade, Brand and Parker may get some table scraps from the "I-want-my-vote-to-be-unique" vote. Shaq gets a few votes because he says he should and some people like that.

Dirk Nowitzki stands alone as the "Great-Player-on-a-top-team-basically-surrounded-by-role-players" vote.

Fair enough. Got any names you want to float?

I will say the odds are 1-to-a million in favor of it being somebody on that list.

Good analysis. I would agree except for one thing: last night's performance really hurt Dirk's chances. I know he personally didn't have that bad a game, but I think his MVP hinges on the Mavs closing strong.

If the Mavs won the division (unlikely now), then I guessed that Dirk would have it wrapped up. Now he's back in the pack again.

Spurminator
04-13-2006, 02:37 PM
I had that thought too, but I'm relying on a guess that at this point in the season most people have made up their minds. And aside from Billups, none of the other candidates is on one of the three teams that are favored by most as Championship contenders (unless people consider the Suns a better team than the Mavs by virtue of their seeding, which wouldn't surprise me a bit).

As I said in my post I think Kobe will get it - but I didn't bet on him because of the bad odds. I couldn't bring myself to bet on Dirk (although it's probably the most interesting bet on that board).

So I went for a totally screwy bet - but imagine if TP gets it! I would own this board and then I would move to nba.com an own them too and after that I would conquer all the internets thus becoming Al Gore's best friend and then we would be unstopable.... (where's the smilie with the evil laugh?)

Nah, I still think the award is Dirk's to lose. Even if they don't win the division, I'd say he still gets it. I have a feeling Dallas may come out big in this season's awards: MVP=Dirk, COY=Avery, 6th Man=Someone from the Mavs.

Jim, you honestly think Wade will get more votes the Lebron or Kobe?! Wade started out very slow this season, if I remember correctly. And it helps that Zo was playing out of his mind. Also, he has Shaq, which even at 50% is better than what Lebron and Kobe have (the irony, I know).

Kobe Bryant is the greatest player in the NBA...2nd only to Wilt Chamberlain as the greatest player of all time...

Regardless of the Lakers 7th place in the Western Conference, they are the biggest draw in the NBA...They sell out every arena across the country...KOBEEEE is the true MVP of the NBA...

I'm sorry but the fact the Lakers did not make the playoffs last year and are 7th this year, speaks against your statement about Kobe being only second to Wilt.

I dont agree that a player should be punished for having good teammates, if that was the standing rule then why did Nash win last year, was Amare chopped liver? I voted for Chauncy because its a tight race and his team is the best in the league and he is the leader. I dont think Wade should even be in concideration because he has done no better than someone like Paul Peirce.

I'm betting on Billups, I don't think Nash will get it two years in a row. He shouldn't.

Billups plays for the team with the best record, and he's carried his team this year, put up great stats. Kobe and Lebron have also done so, but their teams don't have as good a record. So Billups gets it.

If the last two seasons are any indication, the beginning of the Conference Finals, end of the second round.

I just wondered if anyone here knew that since 1988, the MVP has played on a team that had the best or the second best record in the League, why buck the trend now?

I think if billups doesnt win, its highway robbery

I expect Kobe to go off against the Hornets in the final game.

Actually it will be the Kobe-Paul show.

Paul gets 25 pts, 8 Assists, 5 Rebounds.

The fact that it was not only Nash, but Nash by such a huge fucking margin just makes a complete mockery of the award IMO. They need to just give the goddamn award at the beginning of the season and save us all from having to waste any energy debating the issue.
