View Full Version : 2020 NBA Free Agency Thread: Expected Timeline for Spurs Moves

It's much more difficult than usual to predict the timing of events during the NBA's free agency period. In this post-pandemic hellscape, the offseason has been miniaturized so there's a lot going on at the same time. However, although teams will understandably be in a rush, the NBA insists that they will enforce tampering rules more than ever -- which could cause teams to obey or, more likely, delay their announcements of completed signings and trades.

That said, here's a basic outline of what to expect -- and how it will impact the Spurs.

Nov. 20 @ 5 p.m. CT: Free agent negotiations can begin. My guess is agreements will be announced minutes later but, again, that could be delayed. Around this time, the Spurs could announce the re-signing of any of their free agents (even though it wouldn't be official). If, gulp, Forbes or Belinelli are coming back, there's a chance we'd hear about it around this time.

Nov. 20 @ 11:01 p.m. CT: Restricted free agents can sign offersheets with other teams. If Jakob Poeltl is going to sign a big offersheet, this is when we'd hear about it, most likely. A team looking to steal Poeltl would give him a front-loaded contract at 11:01 to make it as difficult as possible for the Spurs to match it. Perhaps that could get delayed by a day or so but I'd be surprised if it's delayed more than that.

This is also the time the Spurs could agree to terms with Devin Vassell and Tre Jones (unless the Spurs are going to use part of the MLE on Jones, which they couldn't do this until a day later, AFAIK).

Nov. 21 @ 11:01 p.m. CT: Teams can start officially signing unrestricted free agents. Trades can officially take place. This is also when Derrick White will become eligible for an extension, although I expect that the talks won't heat up until near the Dec. 21 deadline.

Usually more than 30 hours of moratorium time. Everything is super condensed this year.

Thanks for the recap of above!

Looks like Boston is going to get Myles Turner at the very least for Hayward. Looks like talks are hung up right now because BOS wants Dipo or Warren included and Indy is only offering McDermott. :lol

Then again, Leonard can shoot threes so that helps his value quite a bit.

I wouldn’t read anything into these Heat deals. They’re all one year contracts with team options in year 2. Not sure what option dates are, but let’s them have huge cap space next summer and see how things play out.

See above, it doesn’t. It’s a one year, $9-$10mm deal for all intents and purposes. Heat were going to lose him for nothing and not have space to replace him (given keeping Dragic), so it literally didn’t matter how much he made. In fact, may have had to pay him a premium to get him to give a team option.

Yeah, it's close whether that's good news. On one hand, it's good that Plumlee didn't get $30+ million and it's good that there's one less team might be in the running. But, yeah, not great in that it sets the market for Poeltl right around the price where I'd want the Spurs to allow him to walk. Poeltl being restricted will hurt his value a little bit -- but we'll see if that's enough.

Chinook

Fox's deal should caution people against trying to tank and build through the draft (though that's not what SAC did anyway). If you get anyone even half good, you're forced to max them out without even knowing if they're going to be good enough to take you anywhere. You can end up with two max deals and no cap space and still only get a mediocre team that have no chance at making the playoffs.

Could make sense. Poeltl never said he wants to start, just to play more. Behind Zion he definitly would get more minutes, and as they need Defense and already have enough offense. Could make sense, but i dont see it.

I think we'd hear about interest earlier so the team could work out a S&T if need be. I agree that they wouldn't be likely to offer the contract until the 22nd or after. It locks up their flexibility earlier without really hurting the Spurs since SA has ROFR and don't need Jakob's money to be "freed up" in order to make any moves. They'd just have more time to find a replacement. If anything, SA could go the full five or however many days with it to screw with the other team. Just doesn't seem to have the upside.

Thanks. Yeah, tough to exactly tell what the timing might be. If a team will try to poison-pill the Spurs, they'd want to keep it quiet. But if they are open to a sign-and-trade, they'd want it to be known ASAP.

Right now, there's little reason to believe SA wouldn't match any deal another team would offer. Aldridge is on his last legs, and it's suspected that the team's already shopped him. I actually believe they like him more than most of us do, since Poe said he regrets turning down that extension last year. If throwing something at SA gets them to back off, that's probably the best way to avoid paying like $15 Million a year on Jakob. I think the Spurs would at least go to $10 Million a year as is.

Chinook
11-20-2020, 08:18 PM
To be clear, actual poison-pilling doesn't apply in this case. If he re-ups with the Spurs, he'd be a BYC player I believe, but the only guy who can be poison-pilled this year is White, and that's not something to anticipate hurting SA.

I'm sure a lot of teams are offering Wood a three-year MLE deal. Might even be able to toss in a PO instead of that last year and a kicker.

Wood wouldn't have gone to the spurs for the MLE. Spurs have to pay him more and give somethig to Detroit.

Gotta starting looking through their rosters to see if there's any S&T salvage. Hell, NOP has like a million firsts.

If Poe walks, I wouldn't mind Bobby Portis for part of the MLE. He's a decent player who still has some upside. Just be worried he'd punch out DMDR or Murray.

Holy fuck people are talking about the Spurs trading for John Wall? God I didn't know we had sunk that far. After seeing how fat he got in DC can't imagine him here in the land of breakfast tacos and chicken fried steak smothered in two pounds of gravy.

People are dumb and irrational and can’t accept the spurs are a long ways off from being a contender. They want to make moves because they see all these other teams making moves and think that’s the way to go. No point in making big moves and overpaying for role players when you don’t have a superstar anchor like Tim Duncan.

Give Bobby five minutes alone with Wright, and he'll straighten it all out.

Well the Spurs are fine considering they have no one of value for him to take out.

A lot of role players getting paid good money. Half of these contracts they will regret giving

You can trade anyone in this league...unless it's DDR out of SA apparently...:(

I’d trade Murray and DeRozan for Griffin and Bey

A bunch of teams getting legit NBA players and we signed an undrafted G League scrub to a 3 year deal that many of you seem happy about. I guess I'm in the minority.

Nothing wrong with locking up your third string scrub center for third string scrub money. Now, if that's one of the only moves they make...
