Anyone else ever try this? Surprisingly good, but it looks nasty as fuck.

No different than eating fries with ketchup tbh.

Reminds me of the mom in License to Drive. She was all preggo and ate a huge bowl of mashed potatoes with ketchup.

The best thing about mashes potatoes is that they taste like potatoes. Why would you want to fuck that up by making them taste like ketchup?

The novelty of a potato's flavor wears out fast. Same with white rice. Both get topped in ketchup on my plates.

Same here, except instead of ketchup its ranch.

I can eat almost anything with ranch. Hot dogs, cucumbers, pickles, bananas, carrots, sausages, basically anything.

Yeah, I use condiments when needed, I just happen to be really fond of mashed potatoes. And I do sometimes eat fries with ketchup, but it's usually the sign of crappy fries if I reach for it.

I love other stuff on fries, though: chili, cheese, or sauces more interesting than ketchup.

No way in hell. All mashed potatoes need is garlic powder, salt, pepper, and butter. I second the not putting ketchup on fries unless they suck. And if I do put ketchup on them, it has to be mixed with enough black pepper to start getting dark.

I remember in high school, this one kid used to mix ketchup w/ mustard and mayo, and ate it w/ his French fries on a regular basis. Looked nasty as sh*t, but someone else decided to try it and said it was actually pretty good.

Don't know how.

I put roasted garlic in my mashed potatoes.

Me too. I used to use garlic powder, but roasted garlic is heaven. It completely melts into the potatoes.

Roasted garlic, kosher salt (I'd use grey salt if it weren't so ridiculously expensive), lots of butter, and a little bit of fat free half & half to make it creamy. That's all you need. Oh, and I leave the skins on. And mash it with an old school potato masher so they stay a little chunky. Nummy.

That sounds amazing...but what's "grey salt"? Is it saltIER?

Ketchup is good with potatoes and french fries. But not with mashed potatoes. I would put butter on that .

Grey Salt

Other Names: Sel Gris
Grey salt is a “moist” unrefined sea salt, usually found in the Brittany region of France’s Atlantic coast. Its natural light grey color comes from the minerals absorbed from the clay lining the salt ponds. The salt is collected by hand using traditional Celtic methods and wooden tools. Grey salt has gained great fame in the mainstream culinary world in the last few years, and is considered by many to be the best quality salt available. It is available in coarse grain – which is the perfect finishing or pinching size, stone ground fine – ideally used at the table instead of processed salts, and extra fine (Velvet) grain – perfect for sprinkling over nuts or popcorn.

In short, it's a fancy French salt with a really nice, mild taste. One of those things that's not worth the amount of money it costs and that I never would have tried if a jar wasn't given to me as part of a foodie birthday present, but damn if it's not delicious.

dude, mashed potatoes with ketchup is seriously such trashy eating. No person should be doing that, and if you must you better be around 8 years old and you better be acting like it was an accident that all that red trash sauce made it on to your plate

Ewww, no way. I like my mashed taters simple: boil whole, unpeeled White Rose potatoes; when they are tender throw in some butter, salt, pepper and a splash of cream. Give it a few smashings right in the pot and serve. Easy as can be.

I can't stand garlic or cheese in mashed potatoes. At restaurants I will always ask about the mashed potatoes, because sometimes they sneak that stuff in even if the menu doesn't describe it that way.

My bulimic college roommate used to eat her ketchup and rice concoction every day.

And another roommate used to eat pasta with V8 juice as a sauce.

Used to make my stomach turn.

How do you put the ketchup on the mashed potatoes?
Do you use a spoon and form a bowl in the taters to put the ketchup in?

It's either white gravy or butter.

why boil? it leeches nearly everything nutritious out of the skin.

Oh I know, but mostly because it's convenient for me and I don't really care about the nutritional value of mashed potatoes; there are too many other vegetables I steam strictly for nutrition, to worry about potatoes :lol

Hmmm. I'm not a huge fan of hash browns for breakfast, so I always add ketchup. And when my scrambled eggs get too close....it's a yummy mix up ;)

On steak, definitely not. On scrambled eggs, yes!

Best thing to do with scrambled eggs:

Get a bagel, spread creme cheese on it, put the scrambled eggs on it, add ketchup! Sometimes w/o the ketchup, but still a wonderful combo.

Another option: bagel, creme cheese, spicy sausage and eggs. Doesn't necessarily have to be a bagel, but I prefer it.

This was discussed the last time this topic came around, but apparently ketchup in your mac & cheese is another big ticket. My brother likes it; I find it quite unsettling myself. :nope

Now gravy on your french fries....that's some good eats right there.

I also heard that they like cheese and mayo on their fries in Canadia. :vomit: Someone please confirm or disconfirm.

It amuses me that people get grossed out by mayonnaise on french fries (which I don't like, for the record), but call it an aioli sauce and suddenly it's delicious.
