Germany can survive a winter without easily. It will cost bucks. But their own German elite have a big financial stake in this. They got called out in the articles I posted.
They want the pipeline as bad as the Russians. $
Easily? You saw what happened in Texas when natural gas couldnt get delivered for a few days. Extend that into a month or two in the middle of the German winter.

What leverage does Germany or France have?

C'mon guys, can't we all just get along...generally doesn't work.
They are the 2 biggest economies in the EU. So lots $$$$ of leverage

It all depends on if Putin believes his military has modernized enough since the Georgia debacle to take Western Ukraine relatively easily. By all analysis I have seen, it has.

Outside of the fear of getting bogged down in a conflict there is no reason for him not to invade. He's got the EU & Biden by the balls. Both have stated they will not fight for Ukraine and "The mother of all sanctions" rhetoric will change real quick when oil shoots past $150.
Read Putins' essay. He lays out his viewpoint very clearly, and he appears to be talking himself into a causus belli.

Sanctions rhetoric will not go away, and this may very well be the final nail the in coffin for Nordstream II. Even the Russia friendly CDU in Germany will be unable to block that.

In some ways Putin has boxed himself into invading. If he backs down now Ukraine will move even more towards the West and will be lost to Russia forever.
Yup. The more he tightens his grip the more satellites will slip through his fingers.

This will backfire and push more countries TO NATO.

Yep, that is what I have read as the reason it would be late January/Feb.
Russian "exercises" in neighboring Belarus are due to start Feb 10, if what I read from ...(can't remember name, a Russian defense official maybe?).

Not NATO. We won't commit to a mutual defense treaty. Its not in our political interest to spill American blood for some random eastern European country from the former USSR.

What countries? He has Belarus. All he needs is Ukraine for Russia to maintain a defensible border. Putin knows Russia can never rebuild the Soviet Empire. See map...

Turkey in NATO is the real joke. Now that the Russians have naval bases in Syria turkey has lost a lot of strategic value.

The 30 million Ukranians will.certainly and moan but very very few of them would enlist to go East and try to recover their land
We'll need to give the right wingers refugee status. It's the humane thing to do.

Did you forget WHY this happened in Texas and not other states (and yes, even Germany) that get a lot colder and use natural gas?
Lets forget about the ERCOT savings plan on gas infrastructure. Germany will pay more $ for gas and other fuel. Thats the rub.

Dont think so as Nazi collaborators were all exterminated in Russia. In Ukraine not so much

You definitely did not read the articles and the strange Russian-German respect.
And You forgot that Russia got turned on by the Nazis they backed as well. And still this odd romance.
Do you understand they had a fine agreement with Nazis until Hitler turned on them. They did NOT side with the good guys.

It was done before to Poland and it was easy, ask FrostKing.

Hiding the bodies, that will be the tricky part.

Of course I didn't forget but no gas is no gas. All Russia has to do is shut down the pipeline.
