Had REAL Egg Nog last year; a guy made it at my New Year's party:

    2 CUPS Whiskey
    2 CUPS Rum
    2 CUPS Cream
    2 Cups Half and Half
    Vanilla
a Bunch of eggs (raw don't matter - this is jet fuel; the alcohol kills EVERYTHING)

have always hated egg nog- this stuff was great.

It apparently bothers them, however, that I think they are taking part in it.
It bothers us that your thinking is so faulty.

It just seems like a silly argument to try and persuade an atheist he's somehow agreeing with the tenets of Christianity (and, thus, being hypocritical) by participating in a 45 day buy-and-give-fest we call Christmas.

I never said THAT. I said they were taking part in the celebration of Christ's birth, and were therefore being hypocritical.

So if I got to friend's bar mitzvah, am I also being a hypocrite? What about if I go to a wedding at a church? Heck, what about if I go to church?

    If the Romans and Egyptians put a tree in during the winter, this is the first I've heard of it; so I could not have been partaking in that tradition;
Pretty much the point I made to you that you disagreed with.

ag celebration. the serfs get a parole from work, as long as the log remains alight, or something like that. the tree/savior entanglement is ancient tho. one old custom put bandages on a fir tree, then took it on parade.

    It's called CHRISTmas!

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGHHH!
I thought it was called "Holidays" as in "Holly" days. The times of celebrations honoring Dionysus.

Edit: I know it used to be called Christmas, but isn't anymore. I wonder what happened.

I don't think the majority of people -- Christian or not -- are participating in celebrating the birth of Christ by engaging in the commercial orgy we call Christmas.

Now, if some atheist wakes up Christmas morning -- rouses his family and start extolling on the reason for the gift exchange being to honor the birth of a Messiah in which he doesn't believe; you'll have a point.

Give it up. Christmas, as viewed by atheists, has nothing to do with Christ. Let 'em give their ing gifts.

I don't believe anyone claimed they were precluded; the claim is that they are hypocrites.
    Pretty stupid claim, IMO.

It is when, where and in what spirit, I believe Darrin was making a point about. If there is an evergreen tree in the room; if there are lights on it. If the paper is, predominantly, green and red; if there are certain seasonal songs playing in the background, then, yes, those atheists are, in fact, not just exchanging gifts, but are taking part in the celebration of the birth of Emmanuel, the Messiah, the Prince of Peace, King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Redeemer and Savior, Jesus Christ.

If you, Chumpdumper, just happen to walk over to your parents house sometime in the next month and hand them a present, saying, "I thought you'd like this". Then you get a pass.

All those traditions sound right at place in Jesus' land.

Not in our current social context.

It is the Christmas season. People decorate at this time of year because it is the Christmas season. Radios change their programming, schools, government offices, and businesses close all because of Christmas. It is everywhere. Jesus's name is RIGHT there in the word: CHRISTmas. You can't miss it, no matter how naive, blind and ignorant you might be (present company begrudgingly included). The reason for the season is the birth of Jesus Christ.

If the Romans and Egyptians put a tree in during the winter, this is the first I've heard of it; so I could not have been partaking in that tradition; if that tradition evolved into the celebration that we now understand as Christmas - fine; but it's Christmas now.
No its Christmas. The reason for the season at one point was the winter ing solstice. I hate to break it to you, but the vast majority of people who celebrate Christmas don't do so with any regard to Jesus. Its changed. And you need only look at Black Friday to understand that.

Look, all you atheists have made your bona fides on this board! I get it. You don't believe in Jesus, or God, or anything resembling those. You think people who do are naive, misguided and simple minded. I get that. You don't have to restate those facts.

I am not claiming otherwise. However, just like when I attended a yell practice while bleeding burnt orange 22 years ago; I wasn't celebrating or cheering the Aggies on to victory, but I WAS participating in the festivities.
Let me know when the Aggies decide to sing the Eyes of Texas at yell practice. You know, the same way Christians adopted pagan traditions. I guess when Christians adopted those traditions it was ok and it wasn't celebrating paganism but NOW if an atheist adopts a Christian tradition its participating in a CHRISTIAN celebration. Mmmmk.

Can we pretend this thread was created in 2012 so we can nominate for "Most Failed Thread" of 2012?
What's wrong with being the "Most Failed Thread" of 2011?
