Water issues in Austin
http://www.austintexas.gov/news/aust...some-customersAUSTIN—Austin Water is asking customers in southwest Austin and Lost Creek neighborhood to boil their water prior to using it for drinking or cooking, until further notice. The boil water notice is required because water pressure in portions of the water distribution system dropped below minimum standards. Maps of the affected areas are available and will be updated at this link.
“This boil water notice is currently in specific areas and is a precautionary measure to ensure the health and safety of our customers. Austin Water has not detected contaminants in the water we are providing.” said Greg Meszaros, Austin Water Director.
Austin Water’s treatment plants are functioning normally. Even so, water use has far exceeded typical water usage and exceeded water production by 250 percent over the past 24 hours. Water pressure and water storage have significantly dropped throughout Austin Water’s service area in the past day.
The combination of burst pipes at homes or businesses, Austin Water system water main breaks, and increased customer demand from dripping faucets or storing extra water are creating extraordinary high-water demand.
To avoid additional impacts to water service, such as a citywide boil water notice, impacts to fire protection, or widespread lack of water service, Austin Water is immediately requiring mandatory conservation measures:
- Limit water use to essential needs;
- Now that temperatures are rising, turn off dripping faucets indoors and outdoors;
- Delay the use of appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers;
- Report water main breaks to Austin Water at 512-972-1000;
- If pipes at your home or business have burst, stop water waste by turning off your water at the property-owners cut-off valve. If you are unable to locate your property-owners cut-off valve or if it won’t work, then call Austin Water at 512-972-1000 for assistance with turning off your water.
“We understand that customers are facing many challenges, and we thank you in advance for your conservation efforts to help us get through this unprecedented weather event,” said Meszaros.

I'd also like to know how you use 1000kwh in 2 weeks in a "small house" when there have been blackouts for the past 3 days of those two weeks. I have 2800sqft, use a little more than half that in a month.

Been lucky here so far, power is still on. Noticeable decrease in water pressure, though.
There's a big ing problem with a system using increased pricing due to increased demand as a deterrent to higher use. The reason why there's increased demand is due to exceptional hot or cold. Telling people to off in this conditions is emblematic of a system that refuses to meet people's needs.
How you going to boil water without power? If you have a modern gas range, electric shutoff valves mean no gas. You can use a gas fireplace if you have one, or maybe go out and fire up the grill. You cannot microwave.
Pretty silly stuff, but you just want an opportunity to piss and moan and clutch your pearls.
When you see so many tweets about people's pools freezing because of power loss, it makes it hard to have any sympathy for the higher rates. Then you have entire strip malls lit up like Christmas... while the neighborhood next door is dark as .
I don't understand how this isn't price gouging in a disaster/emergency. Not only is this actionable, I think it's illegal.
I haven't seen nor do I care about tweets about people's pools freezing. Like I said, a system that penalizes people for using energy when it's most needed is a broken system.
